The FIS Cup ski jumping team kicked off the winter season in Kandersteg last weekend. Athletes from 14 nations took part in exciting competitions, although the heavy rainfall on Saturday evening was a real challenge for the organizers.
Marc Stübi, Operations Manager of the Swisscom Nordic Arena and member of the organizing committee, was delighted to see the start list for this year's FIS Cup. In addition to athletes from Europe, nations such as China, South Korea and Kazakhstan were also at the start. "Thanks to the early preparation of our course and the ideal timing of the FIS Cup, we were able to welcome a large and international field of participants to Kandersteg," said Stübi.
The heavy rainfall on Saturday evening affected the competitions, meaning that only one run could be held on the first day of the competition. Despite the hard work of the experienced ski jump team and the support of numerous volunteers, it was no longer possible to guarantee fair and safe conditions. The competition on Sunday delivered spectacular flights with best distances of over 100 meters.
The Austrian team dominated the competitions on both days. On Saturday and Sunday, athletes from our eastern neighbor took all three podium places. Marco Wörgötter won the first competition and Stephan Embacher flew the furthest in the second competition. A total of seven Swiss athletes competed in Kandersteg. The best Swiss athlete was Yannick Wasser from SC Einsiedeln, who finished in the top ten on both days.
